1.             Escalate – To increase the level

I hope this doesn’t escalate the violence in our community.

2.             Crescendo – To build or increase near the end

The music built to a loud crescendo!

3.             Culminate – Finish, final, end

This test will culminate our spelling activities for the year!

4.             Culinary – Related to food or cooking

She is famous for her culinary skills.

5.             Corpulent – Fat

The corpulent man wouldn’t fit into the chair!

6.             Curious – inquisitive

Has he always been so curious?

7.             Cantankerous – Onery, hard to get along with.

That sure is a cantankerous old man!

8.             Corrupt – Bad, dishonest

The governor has been accused of being corrupt.

9.             Clinch -  The final hold, hold tightly

The wrestling match ended with a clinch.

10.         Cinch – For certain, tighten up

I think their winning is a cinch.

11.         Saddle – A leather horse seat

Did you see the beautiful saddle on that horse?

12.         Trumpet – Shout loudly, a wind instrument

The mother goose began to trumpet loudly.

13.         Unanimous – All agree

May I say the vote was unanimous?

14.         Pretentious – Putting on airs, stuck up

The girl is so incredibly pretentious!

15.         Unpretentious – Simple, plain

I like him because he is entirely unpretentious and honest.

16.         Parlay – Make into, talk

Do you think you can parlay that into a business deal?

17.         Portion – A person’s part

Why does your father always get the largest portion?

18.         Belay – Hold, stop

Do you think you can belay that talk until we a re finished?

19.         Brisk – Rapid, in an energetic manner

How can they be so brisk this early in the morning?

20.         Booster – Something that helps another thing go faster

The booster rocket seemed to help get the plane in the air.

 

 

21.         Ugly – Unpleasant to look at

My mother thinks that puppy is not ugly.

22.         Umpire – One who runs a game

The umpire made a call that angered just about everyone.

23.         Undo – Take loose, let go

Is there any way to undo the damage you have done?

24.         Under – Below a thing, beneath

The submarine slipped under the surface.

25.         Ultimate – Final, the most

Skydiving was the ultimate thrill for me!
