1. Write - To make marks that have meaning
What you write is very important.
2. Read - To decode marks that have meaning
The ability to read is very powerful.
3. Decode - To give a meaning to a symbol
Can you decode the symbols on that tablet?
4. Decipher - To decode or change coded symbols into
meaningful symbols
We are trying to decipher the code they sent.
5. Inscribe - To mark on a surface
He wants to inscribe several extra things on the marker.
6. Etch - To scratch marks into a surface
It will cost extra to have them etch the picture onto the surface.
7. Compose - To put together to mean something
How do you compose such beautiful verse?
8. Word - A complete sound or symbol that has a meaning
I just can’t think of the right word right now.
9. Phoneme - A unique unit of sound
That is a phoneme I will not forget!
10. Vowel - A speech sound with air passing through the mouth
The letter “a” is a vowel.
11. Consonant - A speech sound where the flow of air is stopped
The letter “t” is a consonant.
12. Syllable - A segment or piece of speech usually a vowel and consonant
Each syllable must be pronounced very carefully.
13. Phrase - A group of words having meaning
It is a phrase that we are all familiar with.
14. Sentence - A group of words expressing a complete thought
It isn’t a sentence without a capital to begin it and a period at the end.
15. Paragraph - A sentence or group of sentences expressing one point
Each time a person speaks, it is a new paragraph.
16. Statement - A sentence that gives a fact or information
You made your statement and we all understood what you meant.
17. Question - A sentence that asks for information
What kind of question was that?
18. Exclamation - A loud or emphatic expression
Your exclamation nearly ruptured my ear drums!
19. Fragment - A part of a sentence that is incomplete
You will not get credit for writing a fragment.
20. Introduction - A beginning statement of what will follow or be explained
Your introduction made it very clear that you disagree with our ideas.
21. Conclusion - An ending statement telling what was explained
That conclusion really summed up what the article said!
22. Transition - A beginning or ending sentence that connects points
A good transition leads the reader from one paragraph to the next.
23. Details - Specific facts or descriptions
It just isn’t interesting without all of the details.
24. Support - A sentence or detail that backs up or holds up a statement
Can you support those statements or are they just your own wild ideas?
25. Idea - A thought, a point
It was my idea and I am proud to have come up with it!
