1.            Ballot – A slip of paper used in voting

I placed my ballot into the voting box.

2.            Duties – Things one is expected to do

One of his most important duties is locking all the doors at night.

3.            Elect – Place in office

I think we are going to elect her as our club president.

4.            Electorate – The people who vote

It seems the electorate is unhappy with our leaders.

5.            Government – The system that controls our lives

It is true that the  government controls almost everything.

6.            Laws – Things we are and are not allowed to do

There are so many laws that I am not sure about what is right or wrong.

7.            Obligations – Things that must be taken care of

One of my obligations is paying my bills.

8.            Office – A position in government

The President holds the highest office in the United States.

9.            Orders – Things we are made to do

He says that he is just following orders, but I’m not so sure.

10.        Policies – The way things are supposed to be done

Who came up with these new policies?

11.        President – The highest position in a group, leader

Our club voted to elect a new president and vice-president.

12.        Privileges – Things we are allowed to do

If I get into trouble again I will lose many of my privileges.

13.        Restrictions – Things we are not allowed to do

This cast on my arm is causing restrictions in my activities.

14.        Rights – Things we should always be able to do

The Bill of Rights in the Constitution says I can say whatever I want to say.

15.        Rules – Decisions that tell us how things should be done

We have the right of free speech but the rules tell us not to say some things.

16.        Vice – Assistant, next in control

The vice principal has very little power compared to the Vice President of the U.S.

17.        Vote – Being counted in order to make a decision

Why can’t we all vote at the same time?

18.        Washington – (DC) The nation’s capital city

The U.S. Capital in located in Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia).

19.        Washington – (State) A state in the northwestern United States

These apples are supposed to come from Washington State.

20.        Washington – (Man) The first President of the United States

My teacher told us today that George Washington was the first President.

  3. Shape – Form – I think the shape of that car is ugly.
  4. Shelf – A flat, elevated surface – Just put it on the top shelf.
  5. Shelves – More than one flat, elevated surface – These are the last shelves.
