1. Ship – To bring on board a boat
He decided to ship the oars and just drift.
2. Leader - Short length of material for attaching a fishing line to a hook
He put on a leader and then attached the hook.
3. Bolt – A metal rod fastener
The bolt went through the wood and held the pieces together.
4. Stern – The back or rear of a boat
The water bottle was in the stern of the boat.
5. Shade – Shelter from the sun’s rays
The was a small area of shade in the bow.
6. Working – Repeated activity in a certain area
The dolphin was working the area and eating small fish.
7. Slant – To have an angle, neither horizontal nor vertical
The slant of the sun’s rays made slashes on the sea.
8. Ineffectual – Useless, having no effect
The bird’s efforts to catch the fish were ineffectual.
9. Slight – Small, a little
The little bird was slight and delicate.
10. Bulge – A swelling or part that pushes out
The dolphin made a bulge in the surface of the sea.
11. Cut – Slash, wound, lacerate, slice
She used a sharp knife to cut the fish up.
12. Flight – Running away, escape
The flying fish were all in flight from the dolphin.
13. Driving – Pushing, herding, moving
The dolphin was driving the fish in front of him.
14. Burst – To pop, explode, break open
The flying fish burst out of the water and sailed above the surface.
15. Stray – To be away from the group, wander
Santiago though a great fish might stray into the area.
16. Mountains – Large elevated masses of land or rock
The mountains rose above the shoreline.
17. Hills – Small, rounded, elevated masses of earth
The hills were green and peaceful looking.
18. Sift – Screen, to sort out, to select by size
The giant whale can sift plankton out of the sea.
19. Plankton – Tiny plants and animals in the sea
The sea is full of tiny, invisible, plant and animal plankton.
20. Patch – An area, a piece, a repair
This patch of the sea had not been fished in before.
21. Sargasso - Masses of brown algae that float in the sea
The brown Sargasso covered the surface.
22. Formalized – To set up in a certain pattern or arrangement
They had a formalized way of greeting called a handshake.
23. Gelatinous – Jello-like, clear, gooshy, semi-solid
The gelatinous mess spread across the carpet after the bag burst.
24. Bladder – An expanding bag or container
She said her bladder felt full and she needed to use the restroom.
25. Filaments – Strings or strands of material
There were long filaments hanging down from the jellyfish.
