Vocabulary/Spelling Words  07/29/05 (Old man and the Sea page 28) 

1.            Wicked – Evil, bad

The wicked witch put a curse on him.

2.            Affect – Modify, change, cause to be different

How does her anger affect you?

3.            Surface – The outer skin or layer

I have cleaned the surface three times.

4.            Occasional – At times, sometimes

The bird is an occasional visitor in our yard.

5.            Swirls – Curling in circles

We watched the swirls of smoke leave the chimney.

6.            Current – Moving water flow

His skiff drifted with the strong current.

7.            Bonito A medium sized tuna fish

He used part of the bonito for bait and ate the rest.

8.            Albacore - Large tuna used for canning that has long pectoral fins

The albacore had delicious white flesh which he cut and ate raw.

9.            Shank – The part of a fish hook between the eye and the bend

He covered the hook and shank completely with bonito and sardines.

10.         Projecting – Sticking out, protruding

The hook was not projecting out where the marlin could touch it.

11.         Sardines – Small, immature fishes preserved for food

The boy went to the icehouse and brought back a pail of sardines.

12.         Garland – A wreath or string of flowers or leaves

The sardines covered the entire large hook like a garland.

13.         Plummet – To drop suddenly and quickly for a distance

He let the weighted line plummet several fathoms.

14.         Scent – Smell, odor

The scent of the fresh bait attracted the great fish.

15.         Attractive – Pleasant, pleasing

The smell of the bonito and sardines must be attractive to a hungry marlin.

16.         Sap – The thick, sticky liquid inside a tree trunk that carries nutrients

The boy cut the tree limb and sap began to ooze out.

17.         Necessary – Needed, required

It was necessary to carry extra water.

18.         Proper – Correct, right

The hook was the proper size for a really big fish.

19.         Thin – Washed out, diluted, weak

The sun rose with a thin, pale light this morning.

20.         Glare – A harsh, bright, reflected light

The glare of the bright sun stung his eyes.

21.         Straight – Free of curves, bends, or angles

The line went straight down a hundred fathoms.

22.         Drift – To move with the flow of water or air

He could feel the drift of the skiff in the strong current.

23.         Level – Even, not tilted, a certain elevation or height

He had baited hooks at several levels below the surface.

24.         Precision – Exactness, Perfection of  fit or movement

He dropped his lines with the precision of an expert.

25.         Luck – Good fortune, chance

Today, he thought, luck will be with him.
