1.Disaster – Terribly destructive, unexpected event

Yesterday we practiced a disaster drill.

2.            Drill – Practice

3.            Emergency – Event causing risk of life or limb

We pretended that there was a real emergency.

4.            Release – Let go, set free

Our teachers were able to release us to our parents.

5.            Card – A stiff or thickened, rectangular piece of paper

They used information from our green disaster cards.

6.            Response – Answer

Some of the notices Mr. Neely sends home get no response.

7.            Aid – Help or assistance

Our only aid in a real disaster would be ourselves.

8.            Injuries – Wounds, trauma

Mr. Neely told us that we must try to avoid injuries if possible.

9.            Earthquake – Violent movement of the earth

An severe earthquake would close the roads and collapse buildings.

10.        Shaking – Violent back and forth vibrations

The violent shaking would cause windows to burst and ceiling tiles to fall.

11.        Collapse – Fall down, cave in

We get under our desks in case the ceiling starts to collapse.

12.        Isolation – Alone, by one’s self, away from others

We would be stuck at El Dorado school in isolation for a day or two.

13.        Sufficient – Enough, adequate

We hope we will have sufficient supplies to take care of us all.

14.        Survive – Live, go on, continue

The entire purpose of the drill is to help us survive a disaster.

15.        Support – Help, assist, keep up

We could not expect outside support for a day or two.

16.        Assistance – Help, aid, support

No one would be able to get to us to provide assistance.

17.        Caring – Concern for, interest in

Mr. Neely and the other teachers would be caring for us.

18.        Rough – Harsh and unpleasant, uneven or abrasive

Living conditions could get pretty rough after a disaster.

19.        Danger – Risk, possible injury

The disaster drill is to try to prepare us to survive danger.

20.        Peril – Danger, risk

Many events linked to a disaster involve elements of peril.

21.        Supplies – Things needed to do a job or meet a need

The probably would not be enough supplies for everyone.

22.        Necessities – Things required to perform a service or deed

We would probably have to scrounge to get the bare necessities.

23.        Control – To be in charge of, to manage and direct

Mr. Horn would control everything at the school.

24.        Direction – An azimuth, a degree, a way

We would all follow the direction of Mr. Horn.

25.        Compassion – Kindness and caring, concern for another person

We must all have compassion for each other in an emergency.
