1. Exothermic – Giving off heat
The reaction was exothermic and melted the plastic container.
2. Endothermic – Absorbing or taking in heat
He squeezed the cold pack and the chemicals mixed causing an endothermic reaction.
3. Conservation – Saving, protecting
We all need to be concerned about conservation as our population increases.
4. Product – A result, something made
That ice cream is the product of a special manufacturing process.
5. Electrons – Negatively charged atomic particles in atoms
Electrons orbit, or circle, the nucleus, or center, of an atom.
6. Reactants – Ingredients, parts mixed together in a reaction
We carefully added the reactants and the reaction produced a huge ball of fire.
7. Property – Characteristic, what a thing has
One property of most metals is that they are ductile or bendable.
8. Mass – The amount of a substance (not the weight)
The Space Shuttle has enormous mass but no weight while in orbit.
9. Weight – What is measured when earth’s gravity pulls on a mass
When the Space Shuttle returns to earth’s gravity its weight is incredible.
10. Kidnapping – Taking or abducting a person by force
The penalty for kidnapping in most states is execution.
11. Consider – Think about, decide
You had better consider what might happen before you do this!
12. Government – All of the people and agencies that enforce our laws
Our government employs millions of people.
13. Association – A gathering together, a group
The Japanese Business Association was the first place the police visited after Pearl Harbor.
14. Business – A money making operation, a commercial activity
My Dad is starting up a carpet cleaning business and I’m going to help him.
15. Sense – Feeling, ability to think, logic
I sense that you are not telling me the truth.
16. Heaven – A celestial or religious otherworld place visited after death
Some people believe that heaven is a beautiful place and the home of their God.
17. Danger – Risk, possible harm
If the sign says there is danger, then you had better not go in the river!
18. Occupation – job, type of work, employment
The occupation I am training for is to be an airline pilot.
19. Stairs – An extended set of steps going up or down
We’ve been up the stairs and down the stairs several times now.
20. Believe – Hold to be true, think is correct
I believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny too!
21. Negro – Meaning “black” or “dark skinned person” in Spanish
The old man, Santiago, arm-wrestled a man he called the “Negro from Cienfuegos.”
22. Cienfuegos – Meaning “One hundred fires” (a place) in Spanish
Cienfuegos is a town on the island of Cuba where Santiago lived and fished.
23. Docks – The harbor areas where ships are tied up and unloaded
We went down to the docks and watched the stevedores unload the ship.
24. Straight – Without a turn or bend, going in a direct line
That duck has never been able to fly straight.
25. Betting – Gambling, placing wagers or bets on a contest or event
Betting and gambling are forbidden at school and so is selling candy.
