   1.           Stray – Lost, not having a home

The old man hoped a large stray fish would come his way.

2.           Filaments – Thin strings or cords

The Portuguese man-of-war had long poisonous filaments.

3.           Plankton – Tiny sea plants and animals in huge numbers

The plankton caused the sea to have a reddish color.

4.           Surface – Flat area

The surface of the sea was calm and flat.

5.           Bleached – Made a lighter color by sun or chemical

The shirt was bleached to a pale blue color by the sun.

6.           Gelatinous – Jelly like, gooey

The alien creature in the movie left a gelatinous substance on the steps.

7.           Iridescent – Shining as if lighted from within

The tail of the quetzal bird was iridescent and beautiful.

8.           Portuguese – Related to the country of Portugal

Many early discoverers and explorers were Portuguese.

9.           Unharmed – Not hurt or injured

   The man was unharmed by the circling sharks.

10.       Poison – A deadly substance or chemical

    Poison dripped from the fangs of the snake.

11.       Stingers – Sharp, pointed parts that inject poison or chemicals

    Wasps have stingers at the end of their bodies.

12.       Bladder – A bag or sack containing air or fluid

    I had to go so bad I thought my bladder would burst.

13.       Sargasso – A mass of floating vegetation

    The Sargasso weeds were so thick that we couldn’t swim.

14.       Agua – In Spanish = water

    My best friend lives in a town called Agua Dulce (sweetwater).

15.       Mala – In Spanish = bad or ugly

    A mala is a beaded or notched device for counting prayers to make up for misdeeds.

16.       Trailing – Following behind or hanging

    The cowboy was trailing a rope along the ground behind his horse.

17.       Immune – Not affected by, unharmed

    My sister must be immune to the measles virus.

18.       Bubble – A blister or balloon-like form on a surface

    His skin began to bubble up into big blisters where the hot water had scalded him.

19.       Whiplash – A sudden back and forth movement

    He had pretty severe whiplash pain to his neck as a result of the accident.

20.       Welts – Raised, red lines or blisters on the skin

    Her allergic reaction caused big red welts to appear on her back.

21.       Sores – Open skin wounds that may be infected with germs

    Those blisters and sores sure look painful.

22.       Pus – The liquid tha drains from an open, infected, wound

    They had to open the wound to drain the pus out so he could heal.

23.       Lesions – Red or discolored patches on skin, sores, bumps

    The lesions on his stomach were worse than the ones on his face.

24.       Infections – Red, painful, or swollen lesions or areas on the body

    My little brother keeps getting ear infections.

25.       Wounds – Injuries

    Wounds can quickly become infected in the jungle.
