  1. Sounds – Vibrations sensed by the ears and interpreted in the brain

There were new sounds that I had never experienced before.

  1. Behavior – What an animal or plant does
  2. Population – The living things that occupy a certain area

I’m not sure what the population of Lancaster has become.

  1. Evolution – Changes and adaptations in living things over time

We are studying evolution in my science class at school.

  1. Distribution – The number and placement of things in a given area

They are concerned about the distribution of turtles in the area.

  1. Classification – Dividing things into different groups and subgroups

We are looking at the classification of people into two main groups.

  1. Anatomy – The way a thing is built or structured

In our class at school we dissected a frog in order to see its anatomy.

  1. Diet – What an animal or plant eats

I am trying to change my cat’s diet but he doesn’t like change.

  1. Sight – What is seen

Please get out of my sight.

  1. Smells – What is sensed with the nose

There are so many smells here that I am overwhelmed.

  1. Senses – Sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste

I had to use all of my sense in order to find the cupcake in the dark.

  1. Signals – Messages from one being to another

The signals were very clear that there was a big problem.

Your behavior is going to be a problem for your family.

  1. Gestures – Movements that convey meaning

Gestures increase the meaning of the spoken word.

  1. Vocalizations – Voiced sounds that convey meaning

Chimpanzee vocalizations help keep the group safe.

  1. Locomotion – The ability to move

What means of locomotion is he using?

  1. Habitat – The place where a living thing exists

The construction company completely destroyed the animal’s habitat.

  1. Communication – Sending or giving meaning

There must be some kind of communication problem between you and me.

  1. Intelligence – The ability to think and reason

No one questions your intelligence.

  1. Habits – Repeated behaviors that have been learned

It is going to be difficult to break some of these habits.

  1. Kingdom - Three primary divisions into which natural objects are commonly classified                       (ANIMAL kingdom, MINERAL kingdom, PLANT kingdom)

I think the animal kingdom is the most interesting to study.

21.  Phylum – A division or part of the three primary kingdoms (animals with spinal chords)

Humans belong to the phylum chordata.

  1. Class – A division or part of a class (Animals with spinal chords and backbones that are warm   

         blooded with fur and mammary glands)

Mammals are a large and fascinating class to study.

  1. Order – A division or part of a class (Primates – apes)

Apes and monkeys are classified in the order named primates.

  1. Genus – A division or part of an order (Chimpanzee-like apes)

The genus chimpanzee is part of the order Primates.

  1. Species – A division or part of a genus (A particular kind of Chimpanzee)

We human are a dominant species.
