1.            Sardines – Tiny fish used to catch larger fish

He was placing sardines on his hooks.

2.            Rogelio – A male name

My friend, Rogelio, picked me up for school.

3.            Serve – To assist, help, be useful to

Many young people serve their country well.

4.            Green – Raw, young, new

The fish was too green and had too much strength remaining.

5.            Tore – Ripped up, destroyed

He tore up the letter and threw it in the trash.

6.            Slapping – A flat object hitting a flat surface

The tail of the fish was slapping against the wet deck of the ship.

7.            Thwart – The rower’s seat on a boat, to stop

He sat on the thwart and took up the oars.

8.            Clubbing - Hitting with a club

Clubbing a large fish like a marlin can get messy.

9.            Shiver – Shake, vibrate

I didn’t realize I was so cold until I began to shiver.

10.       Confident – Feeling capable, believing in one’s abilities

She always seems very confident to me.

11.       Gamble – To take a risk

To wait until tomorrow would be a gamble because we might run out of time.

12.       Baits – Small pieces of meat or fish to attract large fish

Once the baits were on the hooks we threw the lines into the water.

13.       Salt – To preserve or keep by covering in salt

He put down a layer of salt, then some meat, and then another layer of salt.

14.       Attained – Reached, gained

We have almost attained middle school.

15.       Humility – Not showing off, proud without boasting

One can have a sense of pride and still show humility.

16.       Disgraceful – A wrong or bad act bringing shame

His silly boasting about what he could do was disgraceful.

17.       Pride – Being sure of one’s self,  feeling good about one’s self

Finishing first gives one a feeling of pride.

18.       Fresh – New, healthy

The vegetables were fresh and crisp.

19.       Freshening – Coming up, building, growing stronger

I can feel the breeze freshening as the sun comes up.

20.       Breeze – A noticeable movement of air

The breeze turned into a strong wind from the south.
