1.            Resource – Something we use

Oil is a resource that will disappear some day.

2.            Fuels – Substances that burn to produce energy

What kind of fuels will your car run on?

3.            Energy – The ability to do work

I don’t think I have enough energy to push your truck that far.

4.            Nonrenewable – Usable only once

These batteries are a nonrenewable energy source.

5.            Inexhaustible – Continually replaced

The heat energy from the Sun seems inexhaustible.

6.            Geosphere – Everything related to our planet

I want to know everything about the geosphere.

7.            Geologist – One who studies the Earth

My friend is going to college to become a geologist.

8.            Asthenosphere – The region below Earth’s crust (about 70 miles)

The oceans are about five miles deep but the asthenosphere is much deeper.

9.            Fossil – An imprint or remains of an ancient living thing

Do you see the imprint of the fossil on this piece of rock?

10.       Force – Power, applied energy

The amount of force needed to form this rock were enormous.

11.       Humus – Rotted plant and animal material in soil

This soil is full of humus and will grow just about anything.

12.       Pollution – Dirt and undesirable waste

It is hard to breathe when the air is full of pollution.

13.       Seas – The large bodies of salty water that cover most of the Earth

He told me he had sailed the seven seas in his youth.

14.       Alternative – Not usual, different

Solar radiation is an alternative source of heat.

15.       Lithosphere – The Earth’s rocky crust (about 50 miles)

The lithosphere of the Earth isn’t very thick.

16.       Crust – The thin, hard outer shell of the Earth

The Earth’s crust makes up the continents and land masses.

17.       Magma – Molten liquid rock

The magma rushed out of the volcano’s vent and nearly burned me.

18.       Metamorphic – Rock formed by heat and very high pressures

Metamorphic rocks can be beautiful and colorful.

19.       Sedimentary – Rock formed by mud deposits

Sedimentary rock can have many layers like a cake.

20.        Igneous – Rock formed by volcanic activity or melting

Some kinds of igneous rock are very hard or like glass.
