Vocabulary/Spelling Words  05/25/05 

1.       Time - Measurable periods during which events takes place

        There’s no time to stop and rest.

2.       Happened – Took place, occurred

        It must have happened yesterday.

3.        Events – Occurrences, happenings

        Please try to recall yesterday’s events.

4.        Period – A length of time, a dot ending a sentence

        The American Revolution was a dangerous and turbulent period.

5.        History – A record of events

        The history of our country includes many wars.

6.        Drills – Repeated exercises

        Mr. Neely drills us on the same kind of math problems everyday.

7.        Content – What a thing holds or is filled with

        Our sentences are full of content so we learn while we write.

8.        Trivia – Small details and often forgotten facts

        We should be tested on important facts and not on trivia.

9.        Facts – Information most people believe to be true or real

        He says he is innocent but the facts prove otherwise.

10.     Questions – Requests for information or knowledge

        You may ask each person only four questions.

11.     Maps – Drawings that show where things are located.

        Mr. York likes his students to use story maps to plan their writing.

12.     Past – Events that have taken place

        Don’t let the past keep you from doing well today.

13.     Present – The here and now, this moment

        Live in the present and prepare for the future.

14.     Future – The time after this moment, things that will take place

        If you use drugs you will have a terrible future.

15.     Eyewitness – A person who was there and saw what happened

        Mr. Jackson was an eyewitness to some of the events in Iraq.

16.     Evaluate – To look at, examine, and make a decision

        Mr. Horn is required to evaluate the teachers at El Dorado.

17.     Investigation – Search for and examine facts

        The investigation showed that smoking causes lung cancer and death.

18.     Subject – Information and knowledge that we study

        Mathematics is my favorite subject in school.

19.     Address – A speech, a location or place

        President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address in 1863.

20.     Search – To look for, to seek out

        We all search for the truth.

21.     Slavery – Owning or possessing a human being as an object or property

        Slavery is a condition we must never allow to exist.

22.     Armada – A large force of armed ships

        England defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588.

23.    America – The New World believed discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1499

        The Vikings visited what is now called America in the year 1000.

24.  Indians – Indigenous or native inhabitants

        The Europeans drove the Indians out of their home lands.

25.  Magnum – Larger or more important than normal

        An opus is a work or creation and a magnum opus is a great work or book.
