1.           Internment – A place of confinement

Ben’s family was sent to an internment camp at Mirror Lake.

2.           Camp – A temporary living place

The camp was a cold and windy place far from any city.

3.           Motto – Saying

Ben’s friend was called “motto man” because he made up sayings.

4.           Madness – Chaos, craziness

The world was a place of madness after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

5.           Promise – To swear, to make a commitment

One must be careful not to promise without being sincere.

6.           Journal – A daily record

When you get to do something interesting it is good to keep a journal.

7.           Pinky – Little finger

Kids used to make an oath or promise using their pinky finger.

8.           Japanese – People from Japan or of Japanese descent

The Japanese are an ancient and proud people.

9.           Switching – Changing

The workers were switching trains around in the yard.

10.       Yards – Large areas where activities take place

The yard is where many trains meet and are rearranged.

11.       Tracks – The rails trains run on, parallel metal beams

The train moved swiftly along the tracks.

12.       Clue – A hint

Everyone was silent and that was a clue that something was very wrong.

13.       Announcer – One who speaks aloud in public

The announcer was telling everyone what had happened that day.

14.       Surprise – Sudden, unexpected

The attack on our base at a Pearl Harbor was a terrible surprise.

15.       Attack – An assault, a physical attempt to injure

The attack at Pearl Harbor came without warning.

16.       Pearl Harbor – A harbor in the Hawaiian Islands, a U.S. Navy base

Thousands of sailors and others died in a few hours at Pearl Harbor.

17.       Hawaii – Islands in the Pacific Ocean 5,000 miles west of California

Hawaii is a state of the United States and is a group of islands.

18.       Bomb – A military explosive, something that blows up

The bomb blew a huge hole in the side of the ship.

19.       Enemy – One who is determined to destroy you

Japan became our enemy during World War II after December 7, 1942.

20.       Manzanar – An internment camp about 150 miles north of Lancaster

You can visit the site of the camp at Manzanar but the buildings are gone.

21.       Mirror Lake – An internment camp

Mirror Lake was a prison camp for people of Japanese descent.

22.       Horrible – Awful, terrible

War is a horrible thing and causes people to act in ugly ways.

23.       Packets – Papers tied together in small bundles

Ben’s mother untied the packets of papers and letters from Japan and burned them.

24.       Hesitate – To wait, to stop briefly, to falter

There is a saying that he who hesitates is lost.

25.       Album – A group or collection of pictures or clippings

An album can preserve happy and sad memories.
