1.           Havana – Capital city of island of Cuba

The old man could see the glow of the lights of Havana.

2.           Endure – Keep going, struggle

Can you endure the heat today?

3.           Persevere – To keep going in spite of many obstacles

You must persevere if you hope to finish this task.

4.            Visible – Can be seen

If it is visible, we will find it.

5.           Cramps – Spasms of pain in the stomach or muscles

Your cramps may be from a lack of salt in your diet.

6.           Stepped – Put in place

He stepped the mast and the sail began to fill with air.

7.           Seated – Put in place

If you had seated it properly it would not have fallen over.

8.           Cautiously – Carefully

Approach the bear cautiously!

9.           Cushioned – Softened, reduced impact

The pillow cushioned her fall.

10.       Impact – Hit or strike

The impact of the truck spun the small car around in a circle.

11.       Urine – Waste water excreted by an animal

The zoo keeper washed away the urine of the elephants.

12.       Excrete – To put out, give off, produce

I had no idea that a squid could excrete so much inky fluid!

13.       Course – Direction of movement

We stayed on course for another hour before turning inshore.

14.       Phosphorescent – Greenish or yellowish glow

The phosphorescent glow of the plankton was strange.

15.       Unavoidable – Cannot be missed, inevitable

He ran into the pole because it was unavoidable.

16.       Spoils – Rots, decomposes

Food spoils quickly in this terrible heat.

17.       League – A group of sports teams or countries

The United States joined the League of Nations in 1920.

18.       Braced – Supported, held by a solid support

We braced ourselves for the impact of the sled.

19.         Bitt - A post or pair of posts fixed on the deck of a ship for securing lines

We wrapped the line around the bitt and hoped it would hold.

20.      Thwart – A rower’s seat extending across a boat

She sat on the thwart and tried to remain calm.

21.      Athwart – Across

The plank ran athwart of the deck and made a nice bench seat.

22.      Pity – Feel sorry for

I do not pity you because what you did was not an accident.

23.      Desperate – Hopeless, searching for help or an answer to a problem

We are desperate to find a solution to our lack of team spirit.

24.      Delicate – Fragile, easily broken or destroyed

It is delicate but so very important in making our experiment work.

25.      Reserve – On hand but not in use, ready to go, held back

We kept three players rested and in reserve in case we got behind.
