Roxanne Christine "Roxy" Neely (age 18 - 10/03/89)
College
Roxanne is attending California State University - East Bay. She plays setter for Coach Jim Spagle on the CSU-EB Women's Volleyball Team and is majoring in International Studies, studying Arabic and Farsi. She studied Hebrew at Brandeis University in Massachusetts (Summer Hebrew Institute 2007).
Ms. Neely's educational goal is an MA degree in Persian Studies from the University of Maryland. She would like to serve in the State Department, FBI, or NSA.
Roxanne was recruited for volleyball by Antelope Valley College and L.A. Pierce College, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Valdosta State College, Norwich College, Cal Poly Pomona, Emmanuel College, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and CSU - East Bay.
A 2007 graduate of Lancaster High School in the Antelope Valley, she began her senior year of high school at the age of 16. Roxanne plays the piano and the bass clarinet. She is able to speak, read, and write Farsi.
Volleyball
Selected Golden League Volleyball Player of the Year 2006. Roxy has been a member of several volleyball clubs including Club Nai'a, the Revolution 17s, and now the Antelope Valley Volleyball Club-AVVC/Nai'a -Elite 18's team under Head Coach Larry Vocke. Roxanne was selected for the Golden League 1st team and was the only junior selected for the All Valley Team by the Daily News in 2005. She led Lancaster HS to its first ever Golden League Championship in 2006 under Coach David Gutierrez. Roxanne has been selected to play setter on the 2006/07 AVVC/Nai'a 18-1 team under Head Coach Larry Vocke. (Archive of volleyball newspaper articles)
Volleyball Camps and Campus Visits
Summer of 2007:
Arizona State University Setters and Advanced Technique Camps, Long Beach State University Advanced Setter's Camp (5th CSULB camp), and the UCLA Speed and Explosion Camp (July 30, 2007).
Ms. Neely attended Antelope Valley College during Summer Session 2006 participating in the volleyball and conditioning programs followed by the local VB Camp at Antelope Valley College under Coach Jayne Cwayna (July 10-13). Roxanne then attended the UC San Diego Volleyball Camp (JULY 16-19). Next, she went to the Advanced Volleyball Skills Camp at Oklahoma State University in Norman, Oklahoma (July 22-25) followed by the Setter's Camp at Cal State Long Beach (4th CSULB camp)(July 25-28) and finally the UCLA Volleyball Camp (July 29-Aug.1, 2006). In 2005 she attended the Advanced Skills Camp at UC Santa Barbara. Other campus visits included: University of Nevada - Las Vegas (3), Cal Poly Pomona, and CSU-East Bay.
Martial Arts
Ms. Neely holds a Junior Black belt in the sport of Tae Kwon Do and lettered on her school's varsity volleyball, basketball, and track teams. Roxanne was the California 2000 State Champion and 2001 and 2005 National Champion in her division in Judo. She also took a Gold Medal at the Maruchan Jr. International Judo Tournament in Florida 2001. She took Silver at the Jr. Pan American Judo Championships in Valencia, Venezuela in March of 2005. Her Judo rank is brown belt, which is an adult rank. At age 15 Roxanne was the 8th ranked adult (2005) judoka in the U.S. at 70 kg and (at age 15) was selected Outstanding Adult player at the Northglenn 37th Annual Judo Championships in Colorado 2005 (Gold Medal) .
Firearms
Roxy is an accomplished marksman with various firearms and is particularly proficient with the Smith and Wesson model 629 .44 Magnum Classic. This may seem extreme for a 17 year old, but her explanation is, "It hits what you aim at (at 100 yards)."
Travel
Roxanne is widely traveled and has been to Venezuela (3/2005), Illinois, Maine. Massachusetts, Colorado, Florida(3), North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, D.C., and the Southwestern United States including Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada (6/2005). She has also visited Hawaii and Mexico (2). She competed in England at Wolverhampton in July, 2002.
She completed a seven day - Dog Sledding, Cross-country Skiing, and Winter Survival Course in Maine (December 27, 2005).(Pictures) and attended an Outward Bound Snowboarding and Winter Survival course in the Colorado Rockies (3/28 - 04/04/2007)
Ms. Neely is a U.S. citizen.
